Face Shape

FIND YOUR PERFECT LENGTH FOR SHORT STYLE

• Oval - Lucky you, your face shape is especially great for short cuts. That is because it is proportional and balanced. Choices include super-short crops - especially if your face is petite – bobs, chops, flips and the new full-fringed cuts. Bangs are a great option regardless of your cut; just don’t make it too long you will change your perfect proportions. Etc: Victoria Beckham

• Round – If your cheek is round and wide or your face is wider than its long, you are roundie. Because the proportions of your face are too wide, longer hair slenderizes your look. Keep hair below the ears and get a style that moves forward onto your cheekbones. Super-short cuts aren’t for you. Also, skip solid bangs; seek out soft feathery instead. If your face is full and round, look for styles that draw the eye upward. Etc : Hayden Panettiere

• Oblong or elongated oval – If your chin is too long or out of proportions with your forehead, the illusion of width fixes things. Get a short cut with fullness at the sides; avoid top volume. Depending on how long your face is, you may need to stick with cuts that fall below the jaw line. Etc : Hillary Duff

• Square – Is your face wider than its long? Wear your hair short and rounded. Do you have a strongly squared jaw line? Create a slimming effect by wearing hair somewhat longer than chin length. Also, opt for style that are full, not flat, on top. Layers always soften the features of this strong facial shape, and cuts that feature angled sides will be just right. Etc : Alexa Chung

• Heart-Shaped – This face shape is wider than long, with most of the width at the forehead. Wear hair longer than chin length or have it layered to add fullness at your narrower chin. Best bets; bangs! They conceal that too-wide forehead and they are a must-have if you go shorter than chin length. Etc : Mary-Kate Olsen

• Pear-Shaped – This face is too wide at the jaw line and chin, so hair has to be longer. A super-short crop will make you look like a pinhead! Pear-shaped faces have the opposite problem of the heart-shaped face. Expose your forehead by wearing hair back or by growing out your bangs. This draws the eye up, away from the jaw line. A jaw-length blunt cut is the least flattering style if you the square, heart-shaped or pear-shaped face.

WHATS NEXT?

Your own comfort zone is the major issue. Short style is easier to style when its super- short, but the trade-off is options. If you want them, don’t go above the ear lobe or ask about fringes and layers that allow versatility with shorter looks. Also, do go so short that you can comb-and-go but nothing else.
The last big issue is texture. Think about how curly hair looks cut short. When you remove the weight, you could release more natural movement. If your hair is bulky, wavy or tightly curled, it might demand a specific short cut for control, such as one with layers. Fine hair always looks better shorter, thanks to the thickening illusion. For this type of hair, blunt cuts, boobs and crops are the best.
If have never been good at styling your hair, simple short cut are ideal. Avoid complicated layers, graduated looks ones that demand daily blow-drying. If you like trying out new styles, mid length to jaw-length cuts with layering are your best bets.

While you are getting a new cut for the season, why not change your color at the same time? Not only will enhance your new look, it’ll add body, plus the illusion of fullness and shine. Sleek texture take on stunning shine with color on the monochromatic side, while textured cuts are best enhanced with splashes, highlights and lowlights.
